CSUSB’s Alternative Break Program will travel to the “Emerald City”, Seattle for a week of service and learning. Our time will be spent volunteering and partnerting with local nonprofits. When not working on service projects we will experience the cuisine, music, nature, architecture, and culture of this fantastic area.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Thursday
Meet at the CSUSB SRWC at 5:30am and depart for LAX for an 8:50am departure to Seattle! After arriving in Seattle we will pick up our vans and head to Pioneer Square for lunch on your own and then meet back up at 145pm for a tour of Seattle’s underground. Following our tour we will head to Seattle Pacific University and check-in to the resident halls where we will spend the next 2 night. After a pizza dinner will volunteer with VRP Bike Works and get back to the Resident Hall around 10:00pm.

Day 2 - Friday
Today we will spend the first part of the day exploring Seattle Center area, including the Museum of Popular Culture, Chihuly Garden and Glass and the Space Needle. In the second half of the day we will be volunteer with a local nonprofit organization. Dinner will be on your own and we will meet up for some reflection before going to sleep.

Day 3 - Saturday
Today we depart for Olympic National Park! On the way to our cabin in the woods we will volunteer and may be able to squeeze in hike. We will prepare dinner at the cabins and then relax in the resort’s hot springs.

Day 3 - Sunday
Today we will explore the National Park by foot and by boat. After a great day of exploration we will spend some more time in the hot springs.

Day 4 - Monday
We say goodbye to Olympic and head back to Seattle. We will volunteer with a great organization on the way east. After dinner we will check into the City Hostel where will spend the rest of our nights.

Day 5 - Tuesday
We will volunteer in the morning with Lifelong Chicken Soup Brigade. After lunch we will take a ferry to Bainbridge Island where you will have the option to explore the island by bike of foot. In the evening we will go to Safeco Field and take in a Seattle Mariners gams. Dinner will be on your own at the ballpark.

Day 6 - Wednesday
Most of our day will be spent around Pike Place Market and the waterfront. We will visit the market and aquarium. You will have time to visit the Seattle Art Museum or take a ride on the Giant Wheel (extra fees apply). We will end our last full day in Seattle with a visit to Tillicum Village for a great meal and experience some local story telling and traditions. Will finish with a final reflection on our experience.

Day 7 - Thursday
After breakfast we will pack our bags and say goodbye to Seattle. Our plane departs at 1210pm and we land at LAX at 230pm. Plan to be back at CSUSB around 5pm.

Weather
During the summer season the average lows are in the mid 50’s and the average highs in the mid 60s - 70s. Expect rain as well.

Food
Most meals are provided. Expect to pay for 4-5 of your own meals.
